Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was born in Kolkata on 7th May
1861. He was a great poet, painter, patriot, playwright, novelist, storyteller,
philosopher and educationist. The common theme in his writing is nature.
Nature left a deep-seated impression on him. He was enchanted by nature.
It inculcated a sense of freedom in him. It is also the inner voice of his
poetry. He became the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in
1913 for his collection of poems, “Gitanjali”. He is also well known for his
contribution to art and music.
When storm-clouds rumble in the sky and June
showers come down,
The moist east wind comes marching over the
heath to blow its bagpipes among the bamboos.
Then crowds of flowers come out of a sudden,
from nobody knows where, and dance upon
the grass in wild glee.
Mother, I really think the flowers go to school
underground.
They do their lessons with doors shut, and if
they want to come out to play before it is time,
their master makes them stand in a corner.
When the rains come they have their holidays.
Branches clash together in the forest, and the
leaves rustle in the wild wind, the thunder-clouds
clap their giant hands and the flower children
rush out in dresses of pink and yellow and white.
Do you know, Mother, their home is in the sky,
where the stars are.
Haven’t you seen how eager they are to get there?
Don’t you know why they are in such a hurry?

they have their mother as I have my own.

Poet Rabindranath Tagore describes the month of June in this poem. Lightning and thunderstorms with clouds from the sky in June. At this point the wind blows from the east. A beautiful music is created when this wind passes through the bamboo bushes or the bamboo musical instruments.
During the rainy season, many flowers bloom on the jungle and look very beautiful. The poet tells his mother that perhaps the flowers go to their school underground. They read the text in closed the door of class class. If they come out for a walk during class, their teacher will put them in a corner. So they don’t come out while reading.
Trees and clouds roar in the forest during the rainy season. It's as if they are clapping. At this time the flowers have holiday in school. So they come out wearing different colored clothes.
The last line of the poem brings tears to the eyes of the reader The poet says he knows why flowers rise to the sky. They do this because their mother is in heaven, just as the mother of the poet who became a star in the sky after her death.
